Re: Neon Line Calibration

Thanks for that information, Robin. I started this thread because I had a calibration issue with a Be star in which the noise was so bad (another issue) that I could not get a telluric match. The BeSS check feature in Vspec showed a lot of **. I had forgotten about the wavelength registration featur...

Re: Neon Line Calibration

Hi Once Again, The more I thought about this, I seemed to remember a discussion on ARAS about this very issue. With some digging, I found the link: http://www.spectro-aras.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=458 Lo and behold I was the initiator of this very issue over 2 years ago, and both Robin and ...

Re: Neon Line Calibration

Hi Again, I went to this link, http://www.astrosurf.com/buil/isis/guide_lhires/tuto1_en.htm and I found something that I remember reading a long time ago. Near the end of this tutorial, Christian refers to the wavelength registration feature of ISIS. If I am reading this correctly, if I use only the...

Re: Neon Line Calibration

Thanks you Andrew and Robin for your suggestions. Robin, when you say to add the before and after neons together, are you saying I should stack and sum them? Or would median or average combining work? I was under the impression that sum, average, and median combining dealt with intensity. I would th...

Neon Line Calibration

Hi, I have a question about accurate neon line calibration. My equipment is the LhiresIII, 2400l/mm grating, ST8me acquisition camera, and a 12” SCT @ f/10. I use ISIS for reducing my spectra. I generally take a neon frame immediately before and one after the target sequence. Once I have the final r...

Re: Tiny XLR wire gauge

Thank you for that great explanation, Robin. I had not considered that resistance factor, but of course it makes perfect sense to figure in the length of the wire. Actually, my cable length will be about 3 meters, so all should be good with the 22 awg sire.. I do appreciate your help.

Cheers,

Keith

Re: Tiny XLR wire gauge

Hi Paolo, Just for information purposes, I did use a very fine tip on my soldering iron. The 18 awg stranded wire was quite stiff and difficult to position and solder onto the small contacts. I actually boogered up the connector so badly that I had to order a new one. Even with very tight twisting a...

Re: Tiny XLR wire gauge

Thanks Paolo, Actually, I saw on your website the setup you made for remote operation of the LHires. I also saw that cable that I am making. Do you remember the wire size you used for that? Also, a good point about the heat shrink. I had not thought of that, but it is certainly a great idea. I do ha...

Tiny XLR wire gauge

Hi, I am making a cable for the new Lhires upgrade. I have the tiny XLR female connector and tried 18 gauge wire, but soldering that wire size was not very successful for my limited soldering experience (too thick). I experimented with some 20 gauge speaker wire I had and it worked much better. I wi...

Re: Stability of LHires III with new upgrade

OH, OK. That is good to know, Robin. I figured the 12v meant the input voltage from the power supply. Thanks for the clarification.

Cheers,
