Probleme RMS avec Alpy600

Post by etienne bertrand »

Bonjour,

Etienne,

I think you can experiment in Dispersion tab (after the calibration assistant that is filling it with values) you can disable certain lines - by just clearing the editbox and pressiing recalculate.
However, it makes a bit less accurate the calibration.
In your case, I see the following errors:
- you have a tilting of reference line, I know this is a common misunderstanding what to arrange parallel... not a problem, but you must make sure you selected the correct region for 'Tilt' correction + smile, excluding your UV part (as it's bending)
- I guess you might have a tilting of the core element to ccd as well; you possibly strengthened it in layed position (today I prefer to tighten pointing upwards; of course focusing is even harder)

But with dispersion tab, you can play a bit which line is guilty (by emptying that box and press recalculate => then go).
Also make sure order 4 is checked (not 3, that's not enough for the Alpy! - that's usually when I get an RMS like yours).

I must confess I'm even not satisfied with H-alpha (I'm having +2A skew to right) but it seems to come from the too low 4-order polynom possibility in ISIS for such a wide spectral range (IRAF allows unlimited order).

Attaching my calibrations from this weekend as an example how this should (/ should not?) look (though I've never been able to reach better than R~510 during past few years - might be due to my slit width). Got like a R~510 and RMS 4.307.

Same ATIK 414 + Alpy, but with a Newton (nicer UV ?).
Hope this helps (or others feel free to criticize it too).

* Edit: "RMS 4.307" => typo: 0.437

Hello Etienne,

I tried your data with a pixel size of 6.3. This gives a better fit with an RMS of 0.98A. See the attached spectrum and log file (zipped) for the settings I used.
There is still one line with a large error which the program has incorrectly identified though.

Wavelength fit deviation

point #2 x = 379.053 lambda = 4159.056 dlambda = -0.466
point #3 x = 479.079 lambda = 4508.306 dlambda = 2.424 *******
point #4 x = 489.684 lambda = 4545.333 dlambda = -0.283
point #5 x = 522.184 lambda = 4658.780 dlambda = -0.880

point #12 x = 1259.486 lambda = 7147.302 dlambda = -0.262

Your lamp exposures are very long and there is a lot of stray light between the lamp lines which is reducing the contrast. Is this using the ALPY calibration module? I am using an atik 428 2x binned and average 10x 3sec lamp exposures to get a good result.

Cheers

Pour répondre à vos questions ;

OK I see a problem. There are lines in your lamp spectrum which should not be there. They are confusing ISIS.

Your lamp top,my lamp bottom

Try increasing the pixel size to 6.3. ISIS locks onto the correct lines and you will see a better calibration (It is still not perfect because of an extra out of focus line in your lamp spectrum to the left of the line at pixel ~480 which ISIS is measuring incorrectly)

The ATIK 414 has 6.45 micron pixels, not 6.25 nor 6.3.

By the way, I saw the lamp change intensities in blue similarily when I bought spare ones for my LHires.
I don't think it's a Shelyak error, should be treatable by software.

It was nice to know where ISIS picks that linelist from, so that we could modify it for longterm (not the "free editing" by enering pixel fractions - that's impractical... however, could be a final workaround here on the Dispersion tab, once after nothing else worked well enough...).

Also would be nice to increase the 4 order poly and the ability to specify even more lines.
