eps Aur update

Post by Robin Leadbeater »

The web page listing the spectra of epsilon Aurigae contributed by amateurs to the international campaign has been updated and now includes for most spectra, links to the data in machine readable format (fits or dat) . There are currently 881 spectra listed.

An analysis of the behaviour of the K 7699A and Na D lines during eclipse can be found here

A message from Dr Bob Stencel

You asked about continuing data collection. Oui, yes, please! The reasons to continue some degree of monitoring - perhaps one spectrum per month - is that the system is moving toward apastron and quadrature this decade - both of which may induce spectroscopic changes never-before-seen. Here's to continued good health for all participants. Merci.

I am continuing to monitor the K 7699A line outside eclipse on ~ monthly interval for a while with extra checks planned if I see any significant changes. I will probably also occasionally record the Na D lines. Until there is a permanent home for such data (eg at the proposed but overdue AAVSO spectroscopic database), I am happy to add any further amateur spectroscopic data on eps Aur to my existing list so please keep sending them in. For others who might be interested in contibuting, the spectra should be reduced to Bess standard, in fits format with the header correctly completed
