Call for spectra to confirm possible new RCrB star. A tough target at ~mag 15 currently and likely to fade further

Subject: [baavss-alert] IRAS 03536+6235 - a new RCB variable at active state

Gabriel Murawski identified a new RCB variable star in Camelopardalis using archive ASAS-SN data. Its type was suggested based on color indexes (2MASS, WISE) and light curve. In December 2016, IRAS 03536+6235 started to brighten, reaching 14.3 mag at maximum after a few months, followed by another fade down to 16.2 mag in March 2018. Archive observations show more observed events (R=16.9; B=19.7 by USNO-A2.0; R1=20.0; I=17.8 by USNO-B1.0). At current state, it keeps around 14.8 mag in V. Latest observations by MGAB (G. Murawski), TRT (T. Tordai) and OCN (S. O’Connor) show a possible another fade.

Recent observations:

2018 Aug. 13.60033 - 14.840 V - ASAS-SN

2018 Aug. 18.60063 - 14.730 V - ASAS-SN

2018 Aug. 29.84900 - 14.735 V - MGAB

2018 Aug. 29.85900 - 13.656 R - MGAB

2018 Aug. 29.86600 - 12.327 I - MGAB

2018 Aug. 29.88000 - 16.709 B - MGAB

2018 Aug. 29.89200 - 14.782 V - MGAB

2018 Aug. 29.89900 - 13.632 R - MGAB

2018 Aug. 30.00500 - 14.856 V - TRT

2018 Aug. 30.91100 - 14.889 V - MGAB

2018 Aug. 31.51920 - 14.74 CV - OCN

2018 Aug. 31.52050 - 12.50 I - OCN

2018 Aug. 31.52190 - 14.96 V - OCN

Further photometric and spectroscopic observations are encouraged. If possible, please use photometric filters, as the target is very red (B-V = 1.9, J-K = 3.3). The AAVSO chart for this target is X23211AJ (see link below). Spectroscopic observations are required to confirm RCB type (optical and NIR). Although target very faint (~15 mag), it’s worth to obtain spectra now, as IRAS 03536+6235 is very likely to fade again soon. Please report observations to AAVSO using this name.

Here is the reduced spectrum. Very noisy but clear H alpha emission. The continuum is very red but there is high extinction in this direction. Total galactic E(B-V) is ~1.0 according to IRSA. The Na D line is clear but again that could be Interstellar. Is this the expected spectrum for an RCrB star in a high state ?
