spectrum request from POSS group - bright PSN

Post by Robin Leadbeater »

The amateur supernova hunting group POSS report a bright possible supernova at mag 13 and have requested confirming spectra
https://wis-tns.weizmann.ac.il/object/2016csm
(I was clouded out last night and may be again tonight)

It is an unusual one as a supernova this bright would normally be in a nearby galaxy. In this case though there is no sign of a galaxy but there is a QSO reported at this location. It may not be a supernova but it is definitely worth a look !

Hello Robin,

For me too the météo is not good for this night, there is many clouds here.
But if when the météo will be good il try this.
Are you sure about the magnitude 13 ? Because possible m=18.8.

Hi Etienne,

A spectrum has just been posted on TNS. It turns out it was a CV in outburst. (from quiescent around mag 19 to outburst at around mag 13).

The progenitor was wrongly classified as a possible QSO

Cheers
