Yes the optimum slit width must be different depending on the sky background level. For the ALPY with a rather wide fixed slit, a higher focal ratio than f4 might be better for faint objects with a high sky background. An interesting calculation :)

Hi All,

Thank you very much for the thoughtful answers! When I posted this I didn't expect there would be so many factors to consider but, as always, it was an opportunity for me to learn something new. At some point, we may leave our dark sky location and move to someplace that is more light polluted. Probably not as bright as Valerie's location in the center of Paris but maybe still bright. :-) Anyway, it sounds like I'll be able to make either low res or high res work which is great news. Thanks again!!
