Re: STAROS project in spectroscopy
As far as I can see, STAROS does not even have a discussion forum. To me STAROS seems all one way with little feedback and discussion. Considering how much effort went in to recovering the ARAS forum after the hack would it not at least be useful to use the ARAS forum as a base for STAROS discussion...

Re: STAROS project in spectroscopy
Hi Robin, The page you're referring to was written over 20 years ago, and things have come a long way since then. ARAS remains an informal group of observers who contribute to spectroscopy on targets such as novaes, symbiotics, cataclysmics, but there are no other actions carried out, notably in th...

Re: STAROS project in spectroscopy
Hi Olivier,
ARAS is (or was) much more than that. The goals are the same. Here is a reminder

Re: Using the ALPY200
When measuring very faint objects it is important to accurately subtract the sky background which can be much brighter than the target. If using ISIS, a good check is to look at the sky subtracted image of the spectrum that ISIS produces and turn up the brightness. The sky background in the region d...

Re: Using the ALPY200
If you are using ISIS with the ALPY200, it is important to crop the images to remove the large areas of black where there is no spectrum. If you do not do this ISIS calculates the average of the flat and gets a very low value. When it then tries to scale the images it produces very high values in th...

Using the ALPY200
I thought I would start a thread for people using the Shelyak version of the ALPY 200. I have been using my version for 10 years now. You can see some information about it on my website http://www.threehillsobservatory.co.uk/astro/spectroscopy_20.htm and I talk about it in this workshop https://www....

Re: Traitement alpy 200
Accurate sky background subtraction is also very important for faint objects. Check the sky subtracted image that ISIS produces and turn up the brightness. The sky background near the spectrum should be just noise with no features.

Re: Traitement alpy 200
Other good tips using ISIS are to make the binning zone as narrow as possible and select optimised binning in the general tab. This helps to minimise the sky and camera noise.
