Here's a spectrum taken with a whoppshel (R=30000)

R Aqr Monitoring requested in support to HST observations

Post by Francois Teyssier »

The Mira Symbiotic R Aqr, is still in a peculiar state. The absorption in B and V band remains strong.

Margarita Karovska continues the study of the target and obtained observation time with HST scheduled May 5-8 2023.

She requests spectrocopic observations in visual range during and around the HST run.

Send spectra to francoismathieu.teyssier at gmail.com and copy to arasdatabase at gmail.com for inclusion in the database.

Best,
François

Bonjour François,

If I am not wrong, R Aqr is a bit of a difficult target for Piera and SMM observatories these days, due to this star rising at the same time as dawn.

You know that we'd be delighted to collaborate with Margarita Karovska, I'd appreciate if you could say it to her.

Amitiés, Joan.

Ok François, we will schedule this target for the beginning of May with our eShel spectrograph in Chile (not the whoppshel R=30000 because the target is very low at this time in Europe).

Is R=11000 enough for this kind of study ? or if low resolution could be ok (with ALPY 600) ?

Have you some news about the expected SNR ? Because the target could be faint for high resolution but easy for low resolution.

Probably echelle spectrum will be very difficult due to the low luminosity and the position of the target in the morning sky.
The emission will have a correct SNR, but if the SNR of the continuum is low, the uncertainty of the EW will be high.
Alpy spectrum will provide more robust result I thgink.

R Aqr taken this morning from Chile with a window of only 2 hours before dawn.

the full spectrum with an eShel (R=11000), the target is about mag. V=11,5

and some evolution from our last spectrum taken in november 2022 with a whoppshel (R=30000)
