Great job! It is the first confirmed outburst of this symbiotic star! The spectroscopic data confirm it is of a Z And-type.

Thanks to Hamish Barker for notifying about this brightening and Pete and Olivier for obtaining the spectra. Amazing cooperation. The Atel with the summary of the results is available at this link: https://www.astronomerstelegram.org/?read=15340.

It was an amazing turnaround.

Its collaboration like this - across 5 countries - that makes spectroscopy so rewarding.

Now, onto the next one.

thanks everyone for a fun and collaboration. at least this time neither the SALT, Hale nor VLT scooped the small amateur telescopes! maybe further observation is still warranted in the next weeks, in case we get a bigger bang.

And for those watching from the forum, hopefully it will inspire further activity and collaboration, and perhaps more than a few hours of sleep lost to a good cause. :D

cheers,
hamish
