Observing Cepheid variable stars in an Alpy 600 spectroscope

Post by HughAllen »

As well as ad hoc targets I also like to have a longer term spectroscopy project on the go. I recently finished a period of work observing Cepheid variable stars. I reported the work in the BAA Variable Star Section Circular https://britastro.org/vss/VSSC186.pdf
Classical Cepheid variable stars are of fundamental importance in astronomy as one of the first rungs on the cosmic distance ladder. They seem to be little observed by amateur spectroscopists so I set out to see if their variability could be tracked through their spectra. It would be interesting to see if the results could be reproduced and extended by other Alpy 600 users. All of the spectra are in the BAA Spectroscopy Database https://britastro.org/specdb/

Nice work !

The paragraph in your article about spectroscopy giving the right answer even in the presence of IS extinction is well made.

Cheers
