2026 May: The absortion spectrum of a Nova
Around the time of maxium, when the ejecta are optically dense, the nova exhibits a complex absorption spectrum. Seminal studies Payne-Gaposchkin (1957), McLaughlin (1960) have described these phases as pre-maximum,principal, diffuse enhanced, Orion spectra whose velocity generally increase with time. The theme of the next session will be how the structure and evolution of the ejecta, and its opacity, help us to understand these variations in velocity and profile.
