SN 2024ggi a nearby type II supernova in NGC3621 (Dec -32 deg)

https://www.wis-tns.org/object/2024ggi

It was discovered last night, is rising rapidly and is generating a lot of interest. NGC3621 is at a similar distance to SN 2023ixf in M101 which reached V mag 11 last year so if you are far enough south it could be worth keeping an eye on

Cheers
Robin

EDIT: corrected SN2023ixf max magnitude

bad weather in Chile (Chile's worst weather time of year).
So no spectrum of this target....

Well, the weather has been a little more cooperative in New Zealand. I got a spectrum on Sunday (though a little compromised by high cloud), and one on Tuesday night. GELATO classifies them as unreliable Type II, which is probably about as good as I can hope for.

Comparing the more recent one to a GELATO spectrum shows some possibly similar features, but very buried in the continuum.

Good try Tom !

Type II can be almost featureless at this stage. It will probably develop with time though. Compare with SN 2023ixf for example

Thanks Robin. On Sunday I initially thought I might have pointed at the wrong object, but eventually decided it was about right for an early Type II. The forecast for the coming week here is pretty good, so will hopefully capture some structure as it emerges. I've just kicked off another exposure a few minutes ago.

Not much in the way of structure emerging tonight.

Further development - bit by bit. There was some high cloud around this evening, so a little more noise in spite of a longer exposure. Also there was a full moon at around the same azimuth as the target. So from here it can only get better.

And more structure. A bit noisier, though, especially at the red end. Whether down to terrible seeing (it was awful), moon , or what else I'm not quite sure.

The next few days are not going to be favourable for observing, so perhaps more over the weekend.
