Spectro-polarimetric observations

Une manip un peu improvisée lors de l'école de spectrographie OHP 2018. Des tests sur divers objets autour de la polarisation à base de lunettes de caméra 3D (!). Excellent work as always Christian. You are right to emphasize the need for calibration as non-normal reflection introduces some polarisation and the will happen at any folding mirror or indeed the grating as I am sure you know.

I agree, we must be careful. Concerning errors, the most critical part is located on the front of the polarimeter, i.e. the telescope. A Newton telescope for example is a potential big problem: the folding mirror causes crosstalk, depolarization and adds its own polarization, and that in proportion related to target polarization... It is important here to use a symmetrical telescope (Ritchey-Chretien...).

The part located after the polarimeter is less problematic from my opinion (and simulation. by using Mueller matrix). It is shown that it is easy to realize a full calibration by using normalized Stokes vectors and observing a set of reference stars. For example, the calculation of the equivalent Mueller matrix of the spectrograph (grating, LISA internal folding mirror) seem not here a necessity for to invert instrumental bias.

But clearly, my equipment is far from perfect. For example, it is not normal that there is an instrumental polarization residue as strong by using a circular output polarizer. The filters I use (low cost 3D glass) must produce probably a significant crosstalk. But fortunately, despite this, the results on the sky are correct.

Fantastique travail, c'est encore une fois un article passionnant que tu nous proposes ! Et plein de nouvelles perspectives !
Quelques questions:
Dans le calcul du taux de polarisation, la composante circulaire V est-elle nulle ou toujours négligeable ?
L'atmosphère terrestre - notamment l'ionosphère - peut-elle affecter et faire varier la réponse instrumentale ?
Comment expliquer la montée importante du bruit dans le rouge ?
Faut-il étalonner polarimétriquement l'instrument d'observation à chaque session ou les composantes du vecteur de Stockes de l'instrument sont-elles stables ?
Tu évoques les temps des bruts (toujours les mêmes), quelle limite haute préconises-tu : jusqu'à 75% de la dynamique du capteur ?
Les mesures reposent sur l'existence d'étoiles étalon réputés pour avoir une polarisation nulle...Mais comment peut-on en être sûr ?
Aurais-tu quelques références bibliographiques récentes sur la polarisation en astrophysique à conseiller ?

Sur les étoiles concernées, la polarisation circulaire V est toujours très faible. Il faut le plus souvent du champ magnétique (fort) dans l'atmosphère de l'étoile pour voir de la polarisation circulaire. C'est bien plus délicat a déceler que la polarisation par diffusion (linéaire).

A ma connaissance, aucun impact de l'ionosphère (voit pas le phénomène qui agirait de toute manière). Le bruit dans le rouge : mon capteur CMOS aminci possède un rendement bien supérieur dans le bleu que dans le rouge, d'où ce résultat.

On peut supposer que l'instrument est stable entre les nuits. Le peu d'expérience que j'ai me montre que c'est le cas (mais il faut bien sur ne pas intervenir sur le polarimètre). Oui c'est autour de 75%-80%.

Pour les standards tape sur "polarimetric standard stars". Tu trouvera de la biblio. Des générations de professionnels on bien étudier ces étoiles et les utilises dans bien des publications. C'est du béton, faut faire confiance. Pas facile de trouver de la bibliographie, faut vraiment fouiller sur internet dans les publications professionnelles (j'ai une sorte de synthèse sous la forme d'un chapitre de bouquin qui sortira peut être un jour )
