PyLongslit

Post by Tom Love »

People might be interested in having a look at PyLongslit reduction software. It is not very automated and, while certainly a pretty powerful real world reduction tool, I suspect is intended more for teaching university students how to reduce spectra. It is very interactive at every stage, and produces lots of detailed diagnostic graphs so you can really see what's going on in detail, and try rerunning it to see the effect of tweaked parameters etc. I did one of the tutorials over the weekend (which are quite well written and give full explanations), and found it quite a useful exercise. I think it will be worth it for me to run some Alpy data through it to get a clearer understanding of some of the optimal parameters for my setup.

1) I ran it on a Linux computer, but it should work fine on any python installation on Windows or Mac.
2) It is very verbose with log and error messages, so any problem as it runs is pretty easy to track down.
3) Be meticulous about checking that all the filepaths in the configuration file are correct before you start. The couple of times a command didn't work for me were both fixed once I had identified the relevant file and corrected its filepath.
