Re: Spectro en remote au Soleil !!

I thinks such a project is possible. However, to be productive I feel the whole system could need to be designed with this task in mind. Telescope, spectrometer, coupling, finding and guiding, control software etc. and most important what type of target - magnitude limits, resolution, spectral range...

Re: Sodium doublet to calculate the resolution of ALPY?

James, one of the advantages of EW measurements is that they are insensitive to resolution. While the line is broader at lower resolution it is also less deep keeping the area constant. Provided the line is not blended with other lines (the risk being higher at lower resolution) then EW is, at least...

Berthold, have you tried cleaning the ends of the fibre? Even a small flecks of dust can obstruct the small fibre.

Re: AGITATOR FOR OPTICAL FIBER.

Hi Joan, I think Christian's paper "Modal noise in fibre-coupled spectrographs" gives a good method of testing fibre agitators. If you look at the far field image projected onto a CCD camera you want it to be smooth with a sampling time less than a typical exposure. The key, from the paper...

Re: Observation state of the campaign

Thanks for you patients Ernst. Looking at your model on page 5 of this thread it would be good if you and your team could try to predict what will happen as the B star emerges from the eclipse. Then the model can be tested against the observations rather than retrofitted. Maybe other options (if the...

Re: Observation state of the campaign

Ernst, I was motivated by the discussion just prior to the Fig 2 in the paper you linked to. I was just speculating that rather than an extended region emitting H alpha if you were seeing the hot emitting region from the B stars potential well scattered into the line of sight while in eclipse. As Ro...

Re: Observation state of the campaign

... it occurred to me that rather than an extended hot emitting region the smaller very hot region close to the B star you mention might be illuminating the dust around the M star as in a reflection nebula... Regards Andrew I came across this paper https://arxiv.org/pdf/1102.5198.pdf that speculate...

Re: Observation state of the campaign

Ernst, I have just been reading the paper you linked to above. A very impressive undertaking both observationally and in the analysis. I am no expert on Red Supergiants but I recently read Emily M Levesque book "Astrophysics of Red Supergiants" and it occurred to me that rather than an ext...
