Comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner

A target for the spring, well placed for north observers, the periodic comet 21P/Giacobini-Zinner (the brightness increase).
The comet is at the origin of Draconid meteors shower.

The object is observed by using the prism spectrograph SNAKE (see http://www.spectro-aras.com/forum/viewt ... 980#p10980) and a 250 mm f/4 Newton telescope. Here the CN ultraviolet emission :



It is a faint objet for the moment, m1=11.5 (note the guiding image exposed 20 sec. and my polluted sky (!))

A tentative for compare SNAKE spectrograph and Alpy 600 spectrograph (the spectral range covered by SNAKE is very limited but spectral resolution is superior, see http://www.astrosurf.com/buil/snake/) :



I suggest observations of this object from dark sky observatories.

J'ai tenté à l'instant de la faire à l'eShel, mais j'ai rien vu....
J'avais comme coordonnées pour ce soir RA = 21h 07' 42'' Dec = +44° 57' 26''

A moins qu'elle soit vraiment ponctuelle car j'ai pas vu de tâche floue à ces coordonnées.

Olivier, j'ai moi même tenté un spectre cette nuit avec eShel (!). J'ai pu la pointé sans soucis avec le 250 mm, elle apparait avec une pose de 10 secondes comme une tache flou. Faut vraiment être précis sur les coordonnées car elle file assez vite :

Elle est trop faible pour eShel, je n'ai personnellement rien vu. Elle va gager 1 à 1,5 magnitude d'ici un mois, mais ce ne sera tout de même pas un phare.

j'avais un doute sur les coordonnées, mais finalement j'étais bien dessus mais rien vu.....

Pas beaucoup de résolution sur ce spectre, il faut dire que le ciel n'était pas très bon. Beaucoup de voiles atmosphériques épais.

This comet was one of the target of the last OHP worshop.

After a talk with Christian Buil, I made 3 processings of the main spectra : one to get the nucleus spectra and the 2 others to get the tail spectra. It was difficult to process because I've not made a spectrum in order to remove the sky signal but I think I had a "clear" zone in the upper part of the slit I used to remove this signal. The Sun spectra (G2V) was not removed too.

This was the first low resolution spectrum of this kind of object I've made. Really interesting !
