RS Oph

Postby Francois Teyssier » Wed Nov 28, 2018 6:29 pm

Augustin Skopal has detected broad emission components of H alpha at about -2000 and +2000 km/s on the spectrum taken by Tim Lester
Information Letter page 74 : http://www.astrosurf.com/aras/novae/InformationLetter/ARAS_EruptiveStars_2018-03.pdf
Note : RS Oph is one of the 4 symbiotic reccurent novae.

The line at 6516 A is Fe II (~-2120 km/s in the radial velocity graph)

Comments:
The satellite features in the H-alpha profile of RS Oph (on page 74)
are rather faint and broad. But a more close look is needed, which
I passed for later. RS Oph is in the 'quiet' stage between outbursts,
so accreting material for the presumable 2026 outburst. In fact
it behaves as an active symbiotic. Any such bumps, jet-like structure
around Balmer lines signal a very high accretion rate onto the WD. The
accretion rate is important parameter for understanding the recurrent
outbursts.
