A recent spectrum of symbiotic variable star CI Cyg : zoom on blue/near UV region by using UVEX2 prototype (R=1200) :

Image

For lambda < 3680 A, the flat nebular continuum is well detected. Up to 3680 A we observe the red continuum from the cool giant.

I confirm high-ionization forbidden line detection of the Fe VII at 3586 A (far UV for amateurs in fact !). Also the weak Fe VI at 3905.

These lines seem associated to a colliding winds between hot component and the red giant. These lines are emitted by the outer atmosphere of the red giant, illuminated by the hot component. The corresponding electronic temperature is 10^5 K or larger.

By changing the ASI183MM camera by a ASI1600MM I can not explore the spectrum down to 3400 A and detect the impressive forbidden Ne V at 3426 A

We explore here unknown spectral region for amateurs.

The ASI183MM model severe cutoff is just below 3500 A... for future observation (next UVEX proptotype) the use of CCD camera is a necessity (ATIK460/414 sensitivity is proved down to 3200 A). The actuel designed interface of UVEX2 is not compatible with Atik CCCD camera... :-(
